भारतीय संस्कृति में गुरु को विशेष महत्व दिया गया है। गुरु का स्थान भगवान से ऊपर माना गया है। कबीर जी ने अपनी वाणी में कहा है, गुरु और भगवान दोनों उसके सामने है किसके चरण पहले लागू, इस पर कबीर जी कहा है कि वह गुरु ही है जिन्होंने मुझे भगवान के दर्शन करवाए है। अतः पहले गुरु के चरण लगना चाहिए।
आषाढ़ मास की पूर्णिमा को गुरु पूर्णिमा के रूप में मनाया जाता है। इस दिन गुरु की विधि विधान से पूजा की जाती है। गुरु पूर्णिमा, वर्षा ऋतू के आरम्भ में आती है।
संस्कृत में गुरु शब्द का अर्थ अज्ञान या अंधकार को मिटाने वाला होता है। गुरु साधक के अज्ञान को मिटाता है ताकि वह अपने भीतर ही सृष्टि के स्रोत का अनुभव कर सके। इस दिन साधक गुरु को अपना आभार प्रकट करते है और उनका आशीर्वाद प्राप्त करते है। योग साधना और ध्यान का अभ्यास करने के लिए गुरु पूर्णिमा को विशेष लाभ देने वाला माना जाता है।
भारत में अंग्रेजों के आने से पहले गुरु पूर्णिमा को अवकाश किया जाता था और लोग धार्मिक स्थलों पर जाकर अपनी खुशहाली के लिए प्रार्थना करते और अपने गुरु का आभार प्रकट करते थे। मानवता के इतिहास में इसी दिन को मनुष्यों को याद दिलाया गया कि उनका जीवन पहले से तय नहीं है यदि वे प्रयास करने के लिए तैयार है तो अस्तित्व का प्रत्येक दरवाजा उनके लिए खुला हुआ है।

हमारे देश में कुछ समय पहले तक ऐसा ही माना जाता था कि हमारे जीवन में गुरु की विशेष महिमा है। गुरु सर्वोपरि है। 'गु' का अर्थ अंधकार और 'रु' का अर्थ हटाने वाला अर्थात अंधकार को हटाने वाला। हमारे देश में यह पर्व सबसे महत्वपूर्ण होता था। लोग इस पर्व को किसी जाती या पंथ के भेदभाव के बिना मनाते थे। उस समय ज्ञान प्राप्त करना सबसे महत्वपूर्ण समझा जाता था। समाज में शिक्षक या गुरु को सर्वोच्च सत्ता का दर्जा दिया जाता था। महान सम्राट चंदरगुप्त ने अपने गुरु विष्णुगुप्त का अनुसरण करके दिखा दिखा दिया था कि गुरु अपने शिष्य को क्या बना सकता है।
गुरु पूर्णिमा : वह दिन जब प्रथम गुरु का जन्म हुआ
सृष्टि के अस्तित्व या स्रोत का जो ज्ञान लोगों को है या फिर लोग जिस तरह से इसे समझते है, उसे आदियोगी एक नए रूप में ले गए। भगवान शिवशंकर को सबसे पहला गुरु माना गया है और जिस दिन वो सबसे पहले गुरु का जन्म हुआ उस दिन को गुरु पूर्णिमा कहा गया। गुरु पूर्णिमा वो दिन है जिस दिन पहले योगी योगी ने खुद को आदि गुरु अर्थात पहले गुरु के रूप में बदल लिया था। योगिक संस्कृति में शिव को भगवान नहीं माना जाता बल्कि आदि योगी अर्थात पहले गुरु के रूप में देखा जाता है। सृष्टि के स्रोत या अस्तित्व को आदि योगी एक नए आयाम में ले गए और उन्होंने अपने आप को सृष्टि और सृष्टि के स्रोत के बीच एक सेतू के रूप में बना लिया। उन्होंने मानव को बताया की यदि मानव इस मार्ग पर चलेगा, तो जिसे वह सृष्टि कर्ता कहता है, तो उसके और सृष्टि कर्ता के बीच कोई भेद नहीं रहेगा। तो इस प्रकार से यह दर्शनशास्त्र नहीं बल्कि एक विज्ञानं है। इस वैज्ञानिक पद्धति के माध्यम से मानव प्रकृति की उन सीमाओं से भी परे जा सकता है जिनमें वह सीमित है।
लेकिन आधुनिकता के इस युग में हमने इस महान परम्परा को और इसके महत्व को खो दिया है। आज न तो एक शिक्षक का मान सम्मान रहा और न ही गुरु शिष्य की परम्परा। गुरु पूर्णिमा केवल कुछ आश्रमों तक सिमट कर रह गई है। सरकार के लिए ये विषय अव्यवहारिक होते जा रहे है। लोगों के लिए वैभव, धन दौलत के ज्यादा मायने हो गए है। शिक्षा का स्वरुप बदल गया है। लोगों के पास आध्यात्मिक शक्ति जगाने का समय नहीं है। इस ज्ञान को देने वाले भी निरंतर कम होते जा रहे है। शिक्षा में इस ज्ञान को कोई स्थान नहीं मिल पा रहा है। आज मानव केवल एक मशीन की भांति बनता जा रहा है।

The full moon of Ashadha month is celebrated as Guru Purnima. On this day, the Guru is worshiped by law.
The word Guru in Sanskrit means ignorance or eradication of darkness. The Guru eradicates the ignorance of the seeker so that he can experience the source of creation within himself. On this day, seekers show their gratitude to the Guru and receive his blessings. Guru Purnima is considered to be of special benefit for practicing yoga practice and meditation.
Before the British arrived in India, Guru Purnima was a holiday and people used to go to religious places to pray for their prosperity and thank their guru. On this day in the history of humanity, humans were reminded that their life is not predetermined, if they are ready to try, then every door of existence is open to them.

In society, the teacher or guru was given the status of supreme power. The great emperor Chandergupta followed his guru Vishnugupta and showed what a guru could make his disciple.
Guru Poornima: the day when the first Guru was born
Adiyogi took the knowledge of the existence or source of creation in a new form, or the way people understand it. Lord Shivshankar is considered to be the first Guru and the day he was born the first Guru was called Guru Purnima. Guru Purnima is the day on which Yogi first transformed himself into Adi Guru i.e. the first Guru. In Yogic culture, Shiva is not considered a god but is seen as an Adi Yogi i.e. the first Guru. The Adi Yogis took the source or existence of creation into a new dimension and they formed themselves as a bridge between the creation and the source of creation. He told the man that if man walks this path, then what he calls the creator, then there will be no distinction between him and the creator. So in this way it is not a philosophy but a science. Through this scientific method, human nature can go beyond the limits of which it is limited.
But in this era of modernity we have lost this great tradition and its importance. Today neither the honor of a teacher nor the tradition of Guru Shishya. Guru Purnima has been confined to only a few ashrams. These subjects are becoming impractical for the government. Splendor and wealth have become more important for the people. The nature of education has changed. People do not have time to awaken spiritual power. Those who give this knowledge are also becoming less and less. This knowledge is not getting any place in education. Today, humans are becoming just like a machine.
